“Ensemble playing is an important skill. It teaches you how to blend your sound with others and know when to stand out. Playing with other people helps develop your ears, when to listen to cues and how to know you’ve achieved the desired tone you want from a piece. I’ve played in ensembles like Sinfonia, Intermediate Strings, school ensembles and groups alike, which have helped me improve my violin and viola playing over the years. Participating in groups like these can feel quite scary but quite often, you’ll find someone who you get along with so much, as if you’ve known them for years. However, due to the pandemic plateauing many musicians’ chances to perform to live audiences, I think a safe way to get performances up and running is very well needed.”

Musicians who study classical instruments and vocals can benefit hugely from learning music theory

Grade 5 Theory is a prerequisite for ABRSM exams from Grade 6 onwards. To complement their performance practice, we provide music theory classes tailored to each musician’s existing knowledge and ability.

Recently we had our first graduate of the Grade 5 programme, Toby Burwell, who amazingly passed his exam with merit and is now able to take his Grade 6 Piano. Congratulations, Toby!

Thanks to the enthusiasm of our students, we are now able to offer theory tuition beyond Grade 5. This is useful for any student who is thinking about A Level Music.

Beyond Grade 5, we cover modules such as advanced harmony and figured bass. Students are encouraged to do this in a “hands-on” way, using their instruments to test out their compositions.

Send an enquiry about our music theory classes.
